Why the Jeep Gladiator 4xe’s Discontinuation Matters for Eco-Conscious Off-Roaders

    Jeep

In July, Jeep hinted at an exciting future for enthusiasts with expectations for a V8 Gladiator 392. However, curiosity about the promised 4xe plug-in hybrid from Stellantis CEO Anthony Filosa has been met with disappointment. Recent confirmations from Automotive News reveal that the Gladiator 4xe is officially canceled.

While the news could come as a shock, it follows a trend once Stellantis took a new direction under leadership changes. The previous management’s insistence on electrification seemingly overlooked the demands of the U.S. market, leaving many traditional gasoline-powered models in short supply and underwhelming sales figures.

Since Filosa assumed leadership in 2024, a corrective wave has been sweeping across the brand. Prices have notably decreased, internal combustion engine (ICE) options are making a comeback, and ambitious EV initiatives are being adjusted—an unfortunate consequence being the demise of the Gladiator 4xe.

There remains hope that traditional plug-in hybrid pickups might find a place in the U.S. market in the future, but for now, the concept languishes in obscurity. On a positive note, progress is still being made, as Ram’s range-extended electric truck is reportedly on track for release. Jeep has also assured fans that the electrifying Recon will still debut this year, which is certainly worth monitoring.

Amy Delcamp, Director of Jeep Brand Communications, provided insight into the Gladiator’s ongoing evolution. “The Jeep Gladiator combines its iconic rugged aesthetics with an array of new factory content as it heads into 2026,” she stated. “As we adapt to customers’ preferences for battery-electric options, Stellantis is realigning its strategy and will not include an electrified Gladiator in the Jeep lineup.” Delcamp further assured that funding is being funneled back into the Jeep Gladiator to guarantee its future growth, emphasizing upcoming enhancements in customization and powertrain options.

Uncertainties linger as to how this decision might affect the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Should Jeep provide more details, updates will follow to keep enthusiasts informed.
