Why Congress Is Fighting for AM Radio and What It Means for You

This isn’t just a personal quirk; it’s reflective of a broader trend. Many EV owners find themselves driving vehicles without an AM radio receiver. This omission is becoming more prevalent not only in EVs but also in some internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, primarily due to the electronic interference caused by EV powertrains, which disrupts AM frequency signals. However, legislative efforts are underway to address this issue.

“While manufacturers consider dropping AM radio due to interference disrupting sound quality, regulators value AM frequency for emergency broadcasts, which are essential and do not require subscriptions,” explains Stephanie Brinley, Associate Director at S&P AutoIntelligence. “The debate has been ongoing, focusing less on consumer interest and more on public safety.”

Emergency broadcasting, while pivotal, has evolved in importance with the rise of mobile technology. The Integrated Public Alert and Warning System Modernization Act of 2015 was a significant step in this evolution, mandating improvements in how alerts are issued. The act includes various requirements for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure that alert systems adapt to technological advancements, provide inclusive warning systems, and enhance community preparedness.

Directed FEMA to: (1) establish common protocols for alerts, adapting communications based on geographic needs; (2) ensure the system provides equivalent information to individuals with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency; (3) maintain resilience and security against external threats; (4) promote public education on the alert system.
Required the system to: (1) adapt to future communication technologies; (2) encourage partnerships for community safety; and (3) protect individual privacy.

Essentially, the reliance on AM radio seems outdated, and its continued inclusion in vehicles appears more bureaucratic than necessary, as we have yet to fully define contemporary alternatives.

Despite this shift, Congress is considering mandating AM radio in new vehicles, with recent legislative actions showing substantial support. With a Republican-controlled Congress pursuing this regulatory measure, one might assume that there’s significant public backing. However, experts suggest otherwise.

“While it’s unlikely a consumer would choose against an EV solely because it lacks AM capability, the legislators are primarily driven by the desire to ensure emergency services are accessible,” Brinley highlights.

This sentiment is echoed by Robby DeGraff, Manager of Product and Consumer Insights at AutoPacific. He notes that while concrete data on consumer demand for AM radio is lacking, the absence of this feature is unlikely to deter potential buyers. “More consumers today stream music or listen to satellite radio than rely on AM channels,” he states. Most EV owners, particularly younger demographics, are less inclined to value AM radio.

While Baby Boomers and some Gen Xers may still tune in to AM regularly, younger car buyers typically prioritize modern audio options.

In conclusion, while the debate over AM radio in vehicles continues, the reality is that consumer preferences are shifting. Automakers and regulators must navigate changing technology and consumer expectations as they seek to balance safety with modern amenities.
