Volkswagen Group of America has announced a recall affecting a significant number of its electric vehicles—specifically, 13,769 units of the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 and the 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback models. However, unlike what many might expect, the issue isn’t with the high-voltage battery packs that power these cutting-edge electric cars. Instead, the focus is on a problem with the charging system designed for the 12-volt battery.
Now, you might be wondering, why is the 12-volt battery important in an electric car? Well, even electric vehicles rely on these smaller batteries to run various electrical systems that aren’t related to propulsion, such as lights, infotainment systems, and safety features. Over time, these batteries can age and, unfortunately, fail. In this instance, the problem lies with the onboard charger for that 12-volt battery. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it appears that the charger’s printed circuit board may not have adequate protective coating. This can allow moisture to creep in, potentially leading to malfunction.
What does this mean for drivers? If the onboard charger does falter, you may encounter several warnings from your vehicle, which could even result in a loss of driving functions. Sounds alarming, right? Indeed, imagine turning off your car only to find it won’t restart due to an electrical hiccup, especially when you’re parked or ready to get going. It’s a frustrating situation that many drivers could do without.
Fortunately, Volkswagen and Audi have stepped up to address this issue. The remedy entails replacing the faulty onboard charger, and the best part is that this service will be provided free of charge at authorized dealers. For owners, the companies do not foresee needing to reimburse any costs associated with this recall since all affected vehicles remain under warranty.
If you’re among those affected, don’t worry: owner notification letters will be sent out on April 29. In the meantime, if you’d like to gather more details or have any questions, you can reach out to Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298, or check out their [recall website](https://www.vw.com/en/owners-and-services/about-my-vehicle/recalls.html). Audi has its dedicated [recall site](https://web.audiusa.com/recall/) as well and can be contacted at 1-800-253-2834. For easy reference, the recall number for VW is 93CJ, while Audi’s is 93FR.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the only recent recall concerning both the ID.4 and Q4 E-Tron. Just earlier this month, about 60,490 of these models faced a separate recall due to a software error that could prevent crucial gear indicators from functioning correctly. Plus, VW just recently resumed sales of the ID.4 after addressing a previous recall related to faulty door handles.
While it’s disheartening to hear about consecutive recalls, it’s vital to remember that these actions are taken to ensure your safety and retain the reliability of your vehicle. If you own one of these models, stay in the loop. Keeping tabs on any such news ensures you won’t be caught off guard. After all, driving an electric vehicle should be smooth, safe, and worry-free!
