At a recent press conference detailing its financial outcomes for 2024, Volvo revealed intentions to roll out five new or refreshed models throughout 2025.
Among these will be a tough EX30 Cross Country electric subcompact crossover, scheduled for debut on Feb. 10, as well as the ES90 electric midsize sedan, which was previewed by the automaker last year.
A long-range plug-in hybrid is also anticipated to launch in 2025, although it may be exclusive to the Chinese market. The specific details regarding the other two vehicles remain undisclosed, but they are speculated to be updates of current models, likely the S60 compact sedan and XC60 compact crossover. Notably, the S60 will exit the U.S. market following the 2025 model year and is not expected to return.
In the press conference held on Feb. 6, Volvo showcased a slide indicating five new models in development. This slide displayed the ES90 and the long-range plug-in hybrid, in addition to three models built on a next-generation SPA3 platform.
The initial model utilizing the SPA3 platform will be an EX60 electric compact crossover, set to launch in 2026 and currently undergoing prototype testing. The other potential models may include an ES60 electric compact sedan and an associated electric station wagon, likely referred to as the EV60.
Volvo’s existing electric vehicle platform is the SPA2, which made its debut with the 2025 EX90 and will also serve as the foundation for the ES90. The original SPA platform, introduced a decade ago with the existing XC90, is designed to accommodate gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains. In September, Volvo announced its plans to keep enhancing the original SPA platform for future long-range plug-in hybrids, following its decision to step back from an earlier goal of transitioning to all-electric vehicles by the end of the decade.
During the press conference, Volvo confirmed its intent to eventually transition all vehicle lines to the SPA3 platform.
This upcoming wave of new models is expected to bolster Volvo’s current sales trajectory. The automaker reported a record 763,000 vehicle deliveries in 2024, reflecting a 7.7% increase from the year before. Electric vehicles made up 23% of this figure, and when including hybrids, about 46% of total sales were for electrified vehicles.
