Volkswagen has recently announced a recall affecting over 177,000 Atlas SUVs, including the three-row Atlas and the five-seat Atlas Cross Sport, due to a concerning fire risk, as highlighted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Monday.
The issue stems from a potential installation error of the engine cover in the 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles. If not correctly secured, the cover could loosen and come into contact with the engine’s hot surfaces. This unfortunate scenario could lead to the engine cover melting, raising the risk of a fire under the hood—definitely not something any driver wants to experience. If you own one of these models, you might find yourself catching a whiff of something burning when you pop the hood, or you may notice that the engine cover isn’t fitting as it should.
It’s worth noting that the Volkswagen Atlas underwent a redesign for its second generation in 2024, and it competes closely with models like the Mazda CX-90, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota Grand Highlander. Despite this being the fifth recall for the second-generation Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, it’s important to understand that only the first recall raised significant safety concerns. Earlier this year, nearly 2,018 vehicles were recalled due to a separate engine failure issue, but aside from these incidents, the Atlas has generally held its ground in safety evaluations, securing five-star ratings from the NHTSA and being recognized as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
For those concerned, addressing this fire risk doesn’t have to be complicated. The solution is straightforward: dealers will remove the engine cover entirely, which should ease worries about the potential melting. If your Atlas was manufactured after December 4, 2024, you’re in the clear since it comes with an updated engine cover that isn’t part of this recall. Volkswagen is taking steps to ensure customer peace of mind by offering this service at no charge. Keep an eye on your mailbox, as notification letters will start being sent as soon as April 18.
As a Volkswagen owner, it’s understandable to feel a sense of unease with news like this. Car recalls can be a hassle, but being informed and taking proactive steps to ensure your safety is key. If you recognize any warning signs or simply have questions about your vehicle, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dealer. They’re there to help, and keeping you safe on the road is their top priority. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and taking advantage of these recall fixes will help you drive with confidence.
