The recall involves the 2021-2024 Atlas three-row crossover SUV and the 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport five-seat crossover SUV. The issue is related to the front passenger detection system potentially failing to activate the passenger airbag.

Approximately 271,330 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport crossover SUVs are being recalled by Volkswagen following reports that the front passenger airbags may fail to deploy in the event of a collision, as stated by the AP on Wednesday.

This recall includes specific models of Atlas three-row crossovers manufactured between 2021-2024 and Cross Sport vehicles produced between 2020-2024. The concern lies with the occupant detection system in the front passenger seat, a standard feature in modern vehicles that triggers the passenger airbag only when the seat is occupied, which may not be functioning correctly in these models.

In the affected vehicles, the occupant detection system is linked to the seat heating controls, which connect to a control unit located beneath the front passenger seat via a wire, as explained in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report. A contact fault in this wire could lead to a malfunction in the occupant detection system, potentially causing the airbag to deactivate even if the seat is occupied.

If this issue occurs, drivers will be alerted by an airbag warning light on the instrument cluster and a warning chime. The “passenger airbag off indicator light” will also illuminate.

To address this problem, dealers will replace the sensor mat and wiring harness of the occupant detection system at no cost. Meanwhile, the NHTSA advises owners of the affected vehicles to refrain from using the front passenger seat.

The identification of the recall scope was based on production records, with specific seat design variations in the affected models linked to the occupant-detection wiring issue. Only around 3% of the recalled vehicles are believed to exhibit this defect.

The three-row Atlas midsize crossover was first introduced in 2018, followed by the Atlas Cross Sport, a two-row version with a modified roof, as a 2020 model. Both models underwent significant updates in 2024, including changes to their aesthetics and powertrains.

Vehicle owners will receive notification by mail starting from August 16, urging them to bring their cars to a VW service center. For further information, individuals can reach out to Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or visit VW’s recall site.
