Toyota is initiating a recall for 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrid crossovers due to a software fault that could lead to power braking failure while maneuvering through corners.
This recall affects vehicles from the initial two production years of the hybrid model—2023 and 2024 (the Corolla Cross was first released in 2022, excluding the hybrid variant). As per the NHTSA report released on Monday, these vehicles may possess malfunctioning software within their skid-control units, which oversee both braking and regenerative braking functions.

The software may not provide sufficient brake-fluid pressure when the brake pedal is engaged during cornering. This deficiency can result in reduced stopping power, potentially increasing stopping distances and complicating obstacle avoidance. According to the NHTSA, drivers may also experience a firm brake pedal feel.
Toyota claims that all recalled vehicles are affected by this software flaw. The control unit with the defective software is part of a brake-actuator assembly provided by Bosch. Toyota is currently verifying whether other models featuring actuators from the same supplier and similar software could also experience a loss of braking power.
Dealers will provide software updates for the skid-control unit at no cost to owners. Toyota intends to send out notification letters to owners on November 5. In addition, owners can reach out to Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or access Toyota’s recall center for further details. The reference number for this recall is 24TA11.
Manufactured at an Alabama facility that is collaboratively managed with Mazda, the Corolla Cross Hybrid exemplifies Toyota’s hybrid-first approach within the subcompact crossover category. It boasts an impressive fuel efficiency of 42 mpg combined with its standard all-wheel drive, outpacing non-hybrid competitors like the Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona.
