Toyota has verified a resolution for a recall impacting over 100,000 Tundra full-size pickup trucks and Lexus LX SUVs from model years 2022 and 2023: brand new engines.
The car manufacturer will swap out engines in all of the affected vehicles, as revealed by Automotive News on Thursday. Upon the announcement of the recall in May, Toyota reported it covered 102,000 Tundra and LX vehicles without confirming the replacement of their dual-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engines.
During the assembly of the engines in the impacted vehicles, there might have been leftover machine debris, Toyota specified when they initiated the recall. This situation could lead to potential engine noises, an irregularly functioning engine, or difficulties in starting or maintaining engine operation.
Toyota and Lexus dealers will manage the engine replacements at no cost. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not provided details at the time of publication, yet a Toyota representative told Automotive News that customers would receive notifications this month. Customers will also be offered a temporary vehicle for the period of the service, estimated to take between 13 and 21 hours to finalize.
This stands as the most recent in a series of recalls for the present Toyota Tundra pickup model, representing another stain for the Toyota label, traditionally recognized for its truck durability and engine resilience. Overhauled for the 2022 edition, the Tundra abandoned a V-8 in favor of the dual-turbo V-6, which also comes within a hybrid energy system.
Earlier in February of this year, Toyota withdrew 280,000 Tundras, Sequoias, and Lexus LX full-size SUVs due to transmission issues that could leave the vehicle in gear even when set in neutral, potentially causing unintended movement. Furthermore, in August 2023, over 168,000 Tundras saw a recall for faulty fuel lines. Shortly after the introduction of the new model in June 2022, it was also recalled due to rear axle housing separation from the shaft.
