Should there be a single automobile that my children fervently pleaded to take on our journey to the lake, it is undeniably the Mercedes-Benz GLS three-row SUV.
Achieving a leading TCC Rating of 7.2 out of 10, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS stands out for various reasons, including its cozy interior and impressive array of powertrain options. Fathers like myself find solace in such qualities. However, its high fuel consumption and substantial price tag receive less appreciation.
For a whole week, I endured my kids’ continuous praise for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580. Their adoration is not unfounded, yet they lack a source of income. Here are the advantages and disadvantages.
It took my school-age kids only 15 seconds to locate the 7.0-inch touchscreen controller that emerges from the second-row fold-down armrest. Locating their water bottles at home takes longer. This remote regulates the second-row bench seat’s heating, cooling, and massage settings, their favorite features. These are all part of the $3,750 Executive Rear Seat Package. With 41.9 inches of legroom, the second row provides 1.6 inches more legroom than the front seats but offers the same adjustable features and enhancements. The electronically operated seats recline, and the seat bases can be tilted and moved. The soft-closing doors on my well-equipped test vehicle prevent the kids from forcefully shutting them, as the car’s electric motors effortlessly complete the task by automatically sealing the doors.

Con: Patience is required with the Mercedes GLS
I am not known for my patience. The electronically operated second-row requires several moments to tilt and shift forward to reach the third row. This mirrors the experience with the BMW X7, and it can be particularly frustrating for any parent needing access to the third row with their restless child. Ain’t nobody got time for that. It may be luxurious, but is it practical? Not in the slightest.

Pro: GLS provides the choice of 6 or 8 cylinders
GLS buyers can select between a 375-hp turbo-6 or the 510-hp twin-turbo V-8 in my test vehicle. The V-8 might be excessive. Both engines are linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission, delivering seamless power delivery, shifts, and an overall smooth driving experience. The V-8 emits a menacing growl that intensifies when the accelerator is floored. Weighing over 5,700 pounds, this SUV accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds while emitting a beautiful sound. For those seeking extreme power, there’s the ultra-luxurious Maybach variant that boosts the V-8’s output to 550 hp, or the AMG-badged GLS 63 with its 603 horsepower. While unnecessary, I must admit I’m tempted. If electric power is not a priority, it’s challenging to surpass this level of refinement.

Con: GLS disregards fuel efficiency
Despite the mild-hybrid systems accompanying both the turbo-6 and V-8 engines, the GLS remains a gas-guzzler. The most fuel-efficient model, the entry-level turbo-6, achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined. The V-8 in my test vehicle returns 14/20/16 mpg. These figures seem accurate, as I averaged 17.4 mpg over 232 miles of mixed suburban driving. Every GLS variant demands premium gasoline, though if you can afford a GLS, purchasing the fuel shouldn’t be an issue. To play, you must pay. For those prioritizing efficiency, the electric EQS SUV from Mercedes may be more suitable.

Pro: GLS epitomizes luxury aesthetics and sensation
Entering a Tesla Model X may briefly sway you, but a glance or feel of the GLS reassures you of true luxury. The exquisite Bahia Brown leather and natural grain gray oak wood accents exude warmth and grace. The leather is supple and thick to the touch, with each stitch impeccably executed. The doors close with a resounding thud that Tesla struggles to match, and the silver plastic trim resembles genuine metal.

Con: GLS comes with a luxury-grade price tag
Reveling in real luxury comes at a significant cost. Base models start at $88,150, inclusive of a $1,150 destination fee. The starting price for my GLS 580 was $113,150, but with a collection of premium options like 22-inch AMG wheels and the Executive Rear Seat Package, the final price soared to $123,460.
For those with the means, it is a remarkable choice. If you possess the resources, I highly recommend acquiring one. Your kids will express their gratitude. For others, it serves as an inspiring goal to strive towards.
