Tesla is issuing a recall for 239,382 electric vehicles across most of its model range due to potential failures in rearview camera displays.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that circuit boards in the affected vehicles may short circuit, resulting in the rearview camera image disappearing from the central display screen. This presents an increased risk of collisions while reversing, according to the safety agency.
The recall affects the following models:
- 2024-2025 Tesla Model 3 sedan
- 2024-2025 Tesla Model S sedan
- 2023-2025 Tesla Model X crossover
- 2023-2025 Tesla Model Y crossover
Tesla believes that only about 2% of the vehicles included in the recall actually contain this defect, having identified 887 related warranty claims alongside 68 field reports. However, the automaker informed the NHTSA that it has no knowledge of any collisions, injuries, or deaths linked to this issue.
In 2024, Tesla stood out as the most recalled automaker, but it is not alone in executing a significant recall for defective rearview camera displays. Major automakers such as Ford, General Motors, Ram, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Honda, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Volkswagen, Kia, and Hyundai have issued similar recalls in recent years.
The rearview camera has been required on all new vehicles since 2018, a regulation that coincided with the introduction of advanced dashboard displays performing multiple functions beyond merely showing rearview images. Failures of these displays can conflict with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, as Tesla discovered in 2021, when it was compelled to recall the Model S and Model X after certain vehicle screens ceased functioning.
Not addressing a recall of this nature adequately may lead to substantial penalties. In 2024, the NHTSA assessed a $165 million fine against Ford for not addressing a rearview camera recall promptly and transparently.
The solution for this recall begins with a complimentary over-the-air software update, negating the need for a visit to a service center. Tesla will also keep an eye on the vehicles for signs of circuit board failure or component stress that could result in a failure and will replace necessary computers at no charge.
Tesla intends to inform owners by mail on March 7. Owners can also reach out to the company’s customer service department at 1-877-798-3752, referencing recall number SB-25-001 for additional information.
