The Ram 1500 has been recalled due to a software defect that may deactivate the electronic stability control system, a crucial safety feature designed to help avoid skidding and spinning. In its absence, drivers may have a greater chance of losing control.

This malfunction has caused the trucks to potentially fall short of federal standards. Consequently, a comprehensive recall of 1,227,808 trucks was announced by the NHTSA on Monday.

Similar recalls have affected Dodge Durango SUVs and Ram heavy-duty pickups in two previous cases. However, this marks the first instance of the Ram 1500 being recalled for this particular defect.

The recall encompasses the 2021-2024 Ram 1500 pickup model and also pertains to the 2019 model year. An issue in the software related to the antilock braking system (ABS) can unintentionally turn off the electronic stability control (ESC) feature. Required in every new vehicle sold in the U.S. since 2012, ESC is regarded as one of the safest automotive technologies since the introduction of the seatbelt. The ESC system incorporates a control module that utilizes sensors to identify a loss of control, subsequently pulsing brake and torque inputs via the ABS to correct the vehicle’s path and prevent it from spinning out or rushing forward. This process optimizes traction on all four wheels, thereby diminishing the occurrence of rollover accidents.

Owners might observe the truck sliding or skidding more often, or behaving more erratically than normal. Upon ignition, the ABS, ESC, and adaptive cruise control warning lights could be activated, indicating to the driver that these systems are non-functional.

In 2022, parent organization Stellantis announced a recall affecting over 350,000 Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks from the 2019-2022 model years. Approximately 20,000 Dodge Durango three-row SUVs were part of this recall. In June of this year, Stellantis broadened the recall to include more than 211,000 Durango and Ram heavy-duty trucks from the 2022 model year.

This brings the cumulative total of vehicles impacted by this recall to more than 1.8 million. A software update carried out at dealerships on the ABS module should resolve the issue. Notifications will be mailed out by Oct. 3, 2024.
