Last year, a statement from a Porsche development driver regarding the use of simulated gear shifts in electric vehicles (EVs) ignited a debate in the automotive community. While the assertion classified these features as unnecessary, recent driving experiences, particularly with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, have shown that even seemingly trivial elements can greatly enhance the driving experience. In instances where implemented thoughtfully, fake gears may actually add value.
From a technical standpoint, Porsche’s skepticism towards artificial gear shifts makes sense. Traditional gear shifts in internal combustion engines (ICE) interrupt power delivery momentarily, which hinders acceleration. Given that electric motors can deliver consistent power without this limitation, one could argue that the absence of a gear shift is justified.
However, a recent prototype preview of the Cayenne EV revealed a change in perspective. Kyle Cheromcha from The Drive had the opportunity to engage with Sascha Niesen, head of Porsche’s prototype fleet, who suggested that the company might not be entirely dismissive of the idea of virtual gear shifts.
Interestingly, Porsche is not just considering this feature; they have already developed a prototype boasting a simulated eight-speed transmission combined with authentic engine sounds. These aren’t mere electronic effects but genuine audio recordings, sourced from a Cayenne’s V8 engine.
“We captured both the interior sounds and the exterior exhaust notes,” explained Niesen. “The challenge is synchronizing these sounds with electric motors, as they operate at different RPM ranges, complicating direct translation.” He added that introducing virtual gear shifts could allow for a broader range of sound modulation based on the number of simulated gears.
Naturally, this raised questions about the practicality of implementing such features. Niesen clarified that while consideration is ongoing, any decision would require hardware modifications since the current Cayenne EV lacks paddle shifters. Interestingly, Porsche has indeed created a version with these features, presenting a compelling driving experience.
“I had the chance to drive this concept vehicle,” he recalled. “At first, I was skeptical, thinking the artificial aspects might detract from the experience. However, this was backed by engineers with extensive experience in dual-clutch and torque-converter systems.” The results were surprisingly impressive.
In summary, the automotive landscape is evolving, and the embrace of innovative features such as simulated gear shifts in electric vehicles could redefine the driving experience. By integrating traditional elements into modern technologies, companies like Porsche aim to enhance engagement without sacrificing performance. The future of automobiles is not just about efficiency; it’s about emotion, experience, and connection to the road.
