The declining demand for electric vehicles could lead Porsche to reconsider its decision to produce the second-generation Macan exclusively as an electric model.
According to sources cited by Autocar on Thursday, Porsche is exploring the possibility of introducing a new version of the gas Macan.
Another option under consideration is adapting the electric Macan to incorporate a hybrid system, potentially using a series plug-in hybrid arrangement where a gas engine would serve as a generator to extend the vehicle’s range. This setup is being implemented by Volkswagen Group brand Scout for its upcoming Terra pickup and Traveler SUV, and the hybrid variant appears to be gaining more traction than its fully electric counterpart.
“The reception to the new Macan has been positive, but we are yet to see its long-term performance, given uncertain market conditions,” the source stated.

Deliveries for the electric Macan commenced last fall, totaling 18,278 units by the end of 2024. In comparison, gas Macan deliveries reached 64,517 units last year. The overall total of 82,795 units represented a decrease of roughly 5% compared to 2023.
Porsche is also facing a significant drop in demand for its inaugural EV, the Taycan. The company delivered only 20,836 Taycans in 2024, marking a staggering 49% decline from 2023 figures. However, this slowdown could partly stem from consumers delaying purchases in anticipation of the refreshed Taycan revealed last year.
Not too long ago, Porsche had aimed for 80% of its sales to come from EVs by 2030, but due to a slowdown in EV demand, the company scrapped that target last summer. Now, it intends to continue offering gas engines well into the next decade, including various V-8 options.

The existing gas Macan continues to be available alongside the electric version in select markets like the U.S., although its production is expected to conclude by next year. While the future of a potential gas Macan is still uncertain, Porsche has already confirmed that the current gas Cayenne will remain available beyond 2030, with various updates planned to maintain its relevance. An electric Cayenne is also expected to debut around 2026.
Additionally, the recently redesigned Panamera is another strong candidate to remain in circulation in the coming decade. Moreover, Porsche’s 911 is also projected to continue featuring gas engines well into the next decade.
