NHTSA Puts 583,000 Honda SUVs and Minivans Under Microscope for Serious Safety Concerns

Recently, the spotlight on vehicle safety extended beyond Tesla, turning toward Honda as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened investigations into potential passenger safety issues involving the Honda Pilot SUV and Odyssey minivan. With a total of approximately 583,000 vehicles involved, these developments should catch the attention of families and anyone frequently transporting passengers.

Specifically, the 2023 to 2024 Honda Pilot has been noted for a potential issue with its seatbelt status indicators, which may falsely show whether second- and third-row passengers are buckled. This poses a significant concern, especially considering how obstructive the rear seats can be, making it challenging for a driver to verify seatbelt compliance visually. Parents understand the struggle of ensuring young children are safely buckled up, and an unreliable warning system could pose dangerous distractions while driving. Although the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received only six complaints so far, the implications of any inaccuracies in the seatbelt system warrant further investigation.

On the other hand, the 2018 to 2022 Honda Odyssey appropriately tracks seatbelt usage, but it faces a separate concern. When experiencing sudden jolts, such as hitting a pothole, the rear curtain and side airbags may deploy unexpectedly. Such unexpected airbag activation can cause severe injuries since these safety devices are designed to function in high-impact scenarios. Airbag deployment in unnecessary circumstances can also disorient the driver, creating additional risks on the road. The ODI has acknowledged receiving 19 complaints about this issue, one of which resulted in a preliminary report of potential injury or death.

While it’s important to note that no official recalls have been issued for these vehicles at this time, the owners of the 2023-2024 Pilot and the 2018-2022 Odyssey, totaling over 583,000 vehicles, should remain vigilant regarding these potential issues. It is hoped that the automotive manufacturer will either limit these concerns to a small number of vehicles or promptly address them through recalls and necessary repairs.
