Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled its Mythos series, a new collection of limited-edition vehicles, making its debut with a remarkable speedster modeled after the AMG SL.

This car is limited to 250 units worldwide, having first been showcased in May through the PureSpeed concept. The production model retains both the concept’s name and its captivating design.

Unveiled on Saturday at the 2024 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the PureSpeed is a genuine speedster, completely lacking a roof and windshield, reminiscent of the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss released over a decade ago. For the safety of its occupants, the design integrates a halo protection system similar to that found in Formula 1. Constructed from steel rather than the carbon fiber typically used in F1, the halo helps shield the occupants’ heads from larger objects. The PureSpeed is also equipped with dual rollover hoops located just behind the seats.

Small wind deflectors positioned in front of the cabin direct airflow over the heads of both the driver and passenger, though helmets remain obligatory at speeds exceeding urban limits. To enhance the driving experience, AMG offers matching helmets featuring a communication system that permits clear conversations between occupants at high speeds. The system also allows smartphones to connect for calls or for listening to favorite playlists. When not in use, a dedicated cloth ensures the cabin is protected from weather conditions.

The PureSpeed is based on the SL 63 model from the most recent SL series. It carries the same 577-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine and all-wheel-drive system. The transmission is AMG’s 9-speed automatic, featuring a wet starting clutch instead of a traditional torque converter for improved weight efficiency and quicker response times. Performance metrics indicate a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 196 mph.

Other features taken from the SL include a front-lift kit, rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Also included is AMG’s Active Ride Control suspension, which utilizes hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive dampers. The wheels are 21 inches in diameter and feature carbon-fiber covers that reduce turbulence. Additionally, the car is equipped with active aerodynamic components located underneath.

The front design of the vehicle features a more pronounced nose compared to the standard SL, inspired by the styling of the AMG One hypercar, as noted by Mercedes. The distinctive paint fade also includes hand-painted AMG logos. Inside the concept, unique trim elements and a custom-designed clock on the dashboard created by IWC Schaffhausen, a partner of Mercedes, can be found. Designers also included a 15-speaker Burmester audio setup and a badge on the center console that reads “1 out of 250” to emphasize the car’s exclusivity.

As for pricing, Mercedes-Benz has yet to disclose the cost of the PureSpeed, and it remains unclear whether the vehicle will be offered in the U.S.
