Mercedes-Benz has broadened its recall of loose sunroof panels that could potentially detach and release glass fragments onto roadways, according to a disclosure from the NHTSA on Monday. This marks the third instance of a recall related to this concern.
The current recall encompasses an additional 33,456 older models, which builds upon a previous recall announced on December 23, 2022, that affected 123,696 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS vehicles. Classified as recall 22V-954, this is an expansion of an earlier recall; investigations began five years ago in December 2017 following field reports of incidents occurring outside the United States.
The issue primarily stems from the deterioration of the adhesive over time, which can lead to the glass sunroof panel detaching from the vehicle while it is being driven. The supplier may have utilized an improper primer or bonding agent during production. The NHTSA notes that a glass panel detaching while in motion could heighten the risk of an accident and increase the potential for injury among road users.
Owners or passengers may detect excessive wind noise originating from the sunroof, or the panel might become loose even when it is closed.
The expanded recall impacts the following vehicles:

Mercedes has stated it will implement a reimbursement plan for owners of the recalled vehicles who have previously covered the repair costs themselves.
