Volkswagen and Audi recently announced a recall affecting 60,490 electric crossovers due to a software glitch that could lead to significant safety risks. If you’re a proud owner of one of these vehicles, it’s crucial to understand what’s happening and how it could impact you or those around you.
The recall specifically involves issues with the software controlling the brake system in affected models, which may fail to clearly indicate on the dashboard when the vehicle has been shifted into neutral. This could create a dangerous situation where your car might roll away, catching you off guard if you don’t realize the vehicle isn’t in park. Imagine being in a tight parking space or on a slope when suddenly, without warning, your car rolls away—it’s a frightening thought, and it underscores the importance of having reliable gear indicators. This is why such indicators are closely regulated under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102—to ensure every driver has a clear understanding of their vehicle’s status, preventing potentially disastrous outcomes.
Fortunately, Volkswagen and Audi have already begun addressing this issue. The recommended fix involves a software update for the brake control unit, which dealers will install at no cost to you. It’s reassuring to know that expenses related to this update should be covered under your vehicle’s warranty, eliminating worry about unexpected bills. Given the proactive approach from the manufacturers, they anticipate that they won’t need to provide any reimbursements to vehicle owners.
If you own an ID.4, you should expect to receive a notification letter by April 25. In the meantime, if you have questions, you’re encouraged to reach out directly. For ID.4 owners, the customer service hotline is 1-800-893-5298. Meanwhile, Q4 E-Tron and Sportback owners can connect with Audi’s customer service at 1-800-253-2834.
It’s worth noting that Volkswagen recently resumed production and sales of the ID.4 after a previous recall related to faulty door handles. For the 2025 ID.4, only the larger of the two battery options is currently available, which has understandably increased its price. Many customers, including those who might prefer the smaller battery for its affordability, are left waiting.
As an owner, navigating recalls can be overwhelming, but manufacturers like VW and Audi are taking their responsibilities seriously, looking out for your safety. Your vehicle is a significant investment and part of your daily routine, so it’s always wise to stay informed about any changes that could affect its performance or safety features.
