Kia has recently made waves in the electric vehicle world with the debut of its all-new PV5, a versatile midsize electric van that was unveiled during a much-anticipated **Kia EV Day** event in the sunny Tarragona, Spain. Not only did Kia introduce the PV5, but the event also showcased the stylish Concept EV2 subcompact crossover and the practical production-ready EV4 compact sedan and hatchback, all part of their ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability.
The PV5 marks a significant step for Kia as it lays the groundwork for its future lineup of Platform Beyond Vehicles (PBVs). If you’re trying to wrap your head around what a PBV is, think of them as vehicles tailored to specific needs, whether that’s a delivery van for your local business or a shuttle for your community. The flexibility of the PV5 is notable—it will be available in both passenger and commercial variants, ensuring that there’s a model suitable for just about any requirement. And that’s not all; Kia is even contemplating a more rugged version designed for overlanding, which was hinted at in a concept form during the 2024 SEMA show. The possibilities seem endless!
When it comes to the design of the PV5, it’s a unique mix tailored to its purpose. The passenger version features a convenient single lift-up tailgate for easy access, while the cargo variant opts for a more traditional design with split rear doors. This version also puts practicality first, forgoing the extra windows found on the passenger model. One exciting promise from Kia is a high level of customization for these PBVs. Some models, including the PV5, will even come in a cab-chassis configuration, allowing for various upfits to meet specific customer demands.
At the heart of the PV5 is a new variant of **Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform**, aptly named E-GMP.S. This specialized version offers enhanced adaptability, allowing Kia to create diverse vehicle body types all while utilizing standardized components like batteries and motors. It’s a smart move that contributes to manufacturing efficiency and, ultimately, to the vehicle’s performance.
Prospective buyers will have the option to select from two battery configurations: a 51.5-kWh or a 71.2-kWh option. For businesses focused on last-mile deliveries, there’s even a compact 43.3-kWh battery available in the PV5 Cargo model. Across all configurations, Kia has equipped the PV5 with a single front-mounted motor that delivers a solid 161 hp. With a maximum estimated range of about 248 miles on the WLTP test cycle, the PV5 promises a practical driving experience, though a slightly lower range is expected when tested by the EPA in the U.S. If you’re often on the go, the fast-charging capabilities are impressive too—charging from 10% to 80% can be accomplished in just around 30 minutes with an appropriate DC fast charger.
Despite its compact 175-inch chassis, the passenger version of the PV5 cleverly accommodates three rows of seating, making it a practical choice for larger families or groups. The cargo version offers an astonishing amount of storage space, boasting up to 180 cubic feet of room. And for those whose needs exceed these dimensions, Kia is already teasing an upcoming larger model, the **PV7**, expected to make waves at the 2024 CES show, stretching over 207 inches in length—definitely a vehicle to watch!
In line with its commitment to diversified mobility solutions, Kia has also announced plans for a dedicated PBV tailored specifically for taxi services, set to be based on the popular Niro compact crossover. This move highlights Kia’s dedication to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio to meet the varying demands of customers in today’s fast-paced world.
Sales of the PV5 are set to start in Europe and Asia later this year, with additional global markets expected to follow by 2026. However, the big question on many minds is whether the U.S. will eventually see this innovative new model hit our shores. For now, we’ll have to stay tuned for Kia’s updates.
With the launch of the PV5 and other models on the horizon, it’s clear that Kia is not just participating in the electric vehicle revolution—they aim to lead it. This initiative not only promises to meet the diverse mobility needs of customers but also moves the needle towards a more sustainable automotive future.
