Kia is recalling 74,469 Sorento midsize crossover SUVs due to a software problem that may cause the low-beam headlights and taillights to fail, as revealed by the NHTSA on Monday.
A logical error in the body domain control unit of the affected vehicles can result in a temporary loss of external lighting in specific situations, according to the NHTSA. Even a brief loss of headlight or taillight visibility can impair the driver’s sight and diminish the vehicle’s visibility to others on the road, heightening the likelihood of an accident.
This recall affects non-hybrid 2024 and 2025 Kia Sorento models, along with 2025 Kia Sorento Hybrid and Sorento PHEV versions. These refreshed models feature updated exterior designs, including modified headlights, although Kia has confirmed that the problem originates from the software rather than the new hardware.
The refresh was introduced for the 2024 non-hybrid models, with hybrids and plug-in hybrids receiving updates in the subsequent model year. In contrast, the Hyundai Santa Fe underwent a more significant redesign during this timeframe, adding third-row seating once exclusive to the Sorento but losing its plug-in hybrid option in the transition.
Kia informed the NHTSA that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities associated with this problem. The solution involves a software update, which dealers will provide at no cost. Customers who have incurred expenses for repairs will be reimbursed by Kia.
Owner notification letters are set to be sent out on February 21. Owners may also reach out to Kia’s customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or visit Kia’s recall hub for additional details. Kia’s reference number for this recall is SC331.
