Kia has announced a recall of 80,255 Niro crossovers to investigate potential damaged wiring that could impact the functionality of the airbags.
This recall covers all three powertrain options—hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric—ranging from model years 2023 through 2025. The affected vehicles are equipped with manually adjustable front passenger seats. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that improper installation of the wiring assembly beneath the seat may cause it to become damaged when the seat is moved forward or backward.
Wiring damage could lead to possible non-deployment of airbags or seatbelt pre-tensioners in the event of a crash, unintended activation of side airbags, and the failure to disable the front passenger airbag when a child or lighter occupant is seated. The NHTSA noted that drivers might notice an illuminated airbag warning light on their dashboard if wiring issues arise.
Kia has informed the NHTSA that it is aware of two warranty claims associated with this problem, though no accidents or injuries have been reported.
The corrective action will involve inspecting the wiring assembly on the front passenger seat of the impacted vehicles. Technicians will replace any damaged wiring, enhance protective coverings, and reposition the wiring to mitigate future damage. All repairs will be conducted at dealerships at no cost to the vehicle owners. Kia will also reimburse owners for any repair expenses they have incurred.
Owners will receive notification letters by mail starting March 14, but can also reach out to Kia’s customer service at 1-800-333-4542 for additional details. The reference number for this recall is SC332.
The current-generation Kia Niro was launched for the 2023 model year, featuring a more dynamic design while maintaining the three electrified powertrains that were available in the previous model. It remains a notable entry-level option within Kia’s range of small cars.
