Stellantis is recalling 63,082 Jeep Cherokee crossovers due to yet another problem concerning the 2-speed power transfer case, commonly referred to as the Power Transfer Unit in Jeep terminology, found in four-wheel drive models.

This recall pertains to 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee vehicles that may face unexpected power loss and/or difficulties shifting into “park” as a result of compromised Power Transfer Units, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The affected units may have been assembled with improperly positioned snap rings, which can permit uncontrolled movement of an input shaft and lead to increased wear, the safety agency reported.

Worn components could create sufficient clearance for the Power Transfer Unit to separate from the transmission, hindering the flow of power to the wheels and potentially resulting in the loss of the “park” capability when the vehicle is stationary. This scenario heightens the risk of a collision due to loss of power while driving, in addition to the risk of rollaway incidents when parked.

Beyond power loss, drivers might observe a “Service 4WD” warning on the dashboard, along with noises or vibrations if this situation arises, the NHTSA indicated.

Stellantis, along with its predecessor Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), has previously conducted two recalls for similar concerns. A 2020 recall involving 67,248 Jeep Cherokees from model years 2014-2017 also addressed the rollaway risk associated with vehicles failing to stay in “park.” Furthermore, a 2023 recall addressed a transfer-case malfunction that caused power loss, involving 25,980 Cherokees from model years 2016 and 2017.

Totaling up, Stellantis has received 1,064 warranty claims and 55 additional service records that may be related to this problem, though the company is unaware of any crashes or injuries that may have stemmed from it.

As of the publication date, no solution has yet been identified for the latest transfer case recall. Owners will be informed of the recall by mail beginning February 13, and updates will be provided once a remedy has been established.

In the interim, owners can reach out to Stellantis’ customer service department at 1-800-853-1403 for more information, or visit the automaker’s recall website. Stellantis’ reference number for this recall is 01C.
