The introduction of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011 marked a pivotal moment for Land Rover, positioning it ahead in the competitive landscape of premium compact SUVs. Over the years, the Evoque has faced a wave of newer competitors, but it continues to hold its ground despite the passage of time.
As the Evoque approaches its eighth year without a complete redesign, it enters a market heavily populated with robust options, particularly from established brands like BMW and Audi. However, in recent times, Chinese automakers have made significant strides, presenting fresh challenges in this category.
One such notable competitor is the Jaecoo 7 from Chery, which has garnered attention for its aesthetics that many perceive as influenced by the Evoque. This new arrival is rapidly becoming a common sight on UK roads, indicative of successful market penetration for a newcomer.
Recently, my colleague Alastair Clements and I analyzed both vehicles to better understand their positioning and appeal. Personally, I have always appreciated the Evoque’s distinctive styling, yet the Jaecoo does bear a resemblance to Land Rover’s design DNA, a factor that comes as no surprise in light of past discussions about design similarities in the automotive industry.

Its price point, being over £10,000 less than the entry-level Evoque, is undoubtedly appealing, particularly when considering the significant price differential once both vehicles are equipped to similar specifications.
RB: That comparison highlights a great reference point! Examining them side by side, it’s clear that the Jaecoo mirrors several design features of the Evoque, including aspects like the steering wheel layout and rear window silhouettes. However, the Jaecoo boasts a more spacious interior, providing a comfortable feeling for occupants.
