The fresh 2024 Mazda CX-90 has been turning heads ever since its global premiere. It is constructed on Mazda’s innovative broad platform, the three-row crossover showcases the brand’s new flagship model with wider, longer, and more assertive dimensions. This marks a novel appearance for Mazda and, having spent a week with the new PHEV variant featuring the Premium Plus Package, I am convinced that it will pose a strong competition in its class. The CX-90 has a lot of admirable features, I particularly admire its appearance, the exterior exudes confidence and has a high level of visual appeal. I relished the driving experience and the comfort of the cabin. The fuel efficiency was impressive and the interior layout is thoughtfully designed. The CX-90 resembles a pricier European style and offers great value for its price.

    Exterior Design

The CX-90’s external styling veers away from traditional Mazda aesthetics, gravitating more towards the sophistication typically associated with high-end European or Asian brands. The Rhodium White finish accentuates its elegant silhouette, with the 21-inch alloy wheels contributing to its imposing posture. The sleek contours and contemporary design details grant the CX-90 a unique and upscale look. The CX-90 draws positive attention and several strangers inquired about the make and model.

    Interior Features

The Interior of the CX-90 PHEV boasts numerous appealing attributes, which is largely why I would endorse the Premium Plus Trim. The Black Nappa Leather seats and leather-clad steering wheel and gear shift knob bestow it with a sophisticated and opulent appearance. The 2nd row Captain’s Chairs are a delightful addition, passengers find them enjoyable. There is ample storage space throughout the vehicle and Mazda has ensured there are plentiful outlets for charging USB type C and regular. No more squabbles over outlets. The CX-90 is primed for enjoyment with a 12-volt power outlet, 150-Watt accessory power outlet, and a 1500-Watt accessory outlet. When I glanced at the interior of the CX-90 as we readied for our road trip to Flagstaff, I thought, no one will be grumbling about the journey or arguing over outlets and I was correct!

The Premium plus model is equipped with the larger 12.3-inch fully digital LCD meter and colored center display, which is an added advantage with the Premium Plus level of trim. The instrument gauge layout is uncluttered, easy to read, and the heads up display is beneficial. It would be great to see the integration of the speed limit into the heads up display at some point. The all new CX-90 makes a robust entrance with its interior and I am eager to witness where Mazda takes this in the upcoming models.

    Engine and Transmission

The core of the CX-90 PHEV is the efficient e-SKYACTIV®-PHEV: 2.5L engine and 68 kW electric motor, with the combined system producing 323 hp. I didn’t realize until the return journey from Flagstaff but I knew I would need to refuel at around the 75% mark on the way home. I kept a close eye on the fuel gauge and I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the EV component of the engine was, we didn’t need to make any stops at all. In fact, I had 90 gallons remaining. The PHEV achieves an outstanding combined 56 MPGe.

    Driving Experience

Driving the CX-90 across various terrains, from mountainous regions with snow and rain to typical city streets, provided me with a comprehensive test of its real capabilities. The vehicle’s off-road mode proved handy on some snowy mountain roads leading up to Snowbowl Ski resort. The vehicle handles adeptly in diverse terrains and I found it to be comfortable for the over 3-hour road trip back home after a full day on the mountain.

    Final Thoughts

Mazda demonstrates with the introduction of the CX-90 that it is capable of delivering a premium, larger SUV that stands up to competition within its segment. The PHEV provides immense value for its MSRP and I believe it can cater to a wide range of drivers out there. It possesses an attractive appearance and fulfills the requirements of most SUV drivers, particularly families seeking good fuel efficiency, passenger capacity, and a stylish option. The starting price for a Mazda CX-90 PHEV is MSRP $49,945, while my test vehicle with additional features and the Premium Plus Trim was priced at MSRP $58,920.
