Honda is recalling over 200,000 crossover SUVs due to concerns that fuel-filler neck components may detach, leading to fuel leaks and an increased risk of fires.
This recall affects the 2023-2024 Honda Passport two-row mid-size SUVs and the 2023-2025 Honda Pilot three-row mid-size SUVs. According to the NHTSA, some of these vehicles could have an incomplete connection between the fuel-filler neck tube and pipe, which are essential for directing fuel into the gas tank.
If these components are not securely connected, they could disconnect during an accident, potentially resulting in fuel leakage and the risk of ignition if there is an available flame source, the agency cautioned.
Honda indicated that there may have been an issue during the assembly of the fuel pipe, with components potentially being installed out of order, hindering proper connectivity. As of November 20, 2024, the automaker has received one warranty claim connected to this concern noted during a dealership’s pre-delivery inspection, and there have been no reported injuries or fatalities linked to this situation.
Dealers will be responsible for inspecting the fuel-filler neck tube and pipe and will carry out any necessary repairs to ensure a secure connection at no cost to vehicle owners. Additionally, Honda plans to reimburse owners who have already incurred expenses for these repairs.
Honda anticipates sending out notification letters to owners by January 6, 2025. Owners can also reach out to the company’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or check Honda’s recall website here. The reference number for this recall is OKM.
Notably, the Passport and Pilot are not included in two other significant recalls recently issued by Honda. In October, the company announced a recall involving roughly 720,000 vehicles for cracked fuel pumps and another recalling 1.7 million vehicles due to steering issues.
