General Motors is initiating a recall of 132,037 heavy-duty pickup trucks under the Chevrolet and GMC brands due to potential issues with tailgates that may open unexpectedly.

This recall specifically affects models equipped with power-unlatching tailgates, which feature an electronic release switch that could short circuit if exposed to water, as disclosed by the NHTSA on Tuesday. This malfunction may lead to the tailgate becoming unlatched when the vehicle is in Park. The NHTSA warns that if drivers do not verify that the tailgate is properly secured before driving, it could open and permit cargo to fall from the truck bed.

The recall includes the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD, along with the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD. GM has stated that it is unaware of any incidents or injuries linked to this defect, which the company estimates affects 1% of the recalled vehicles. Additionally, GM has recently addressed transmission problems in earlier versions of these trucks from the 2021 and 2022 model years.

According to the automaker, there have been 237 reports of tailgates unlatching “while driving,” but GM believes the tailgates likely became unlatched while the vehicles were in Park and then opened afterward. The company explained that software logic prevents the tailgate latch from releasing while the vehicles are in Drive or Reverse.

The remedy involves replacing the external touchpad switch assemblies for the implicated tailgates, with dealers providing this service at no charge. The new replacement parts are made from materials that are more resistant to water intrusion. GM also plans to reimburse owners who may have paid for related repairs out of pocket. Until the recall repairs are completed, GM advises owners to ensure that the tailgate is securely closed and latched before operating the vehicle.

GM is set to send out owner notification letters on January 13, 2025. Owners can reach out to Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, or they can visit GM’s recall webpage. The reference number for this recall is N242469160.
