General Motors has issued a recall for a significant number of its recent full-size SUVs and pickup trucks due to a malfunctioning warning light that does not activate when brake fluid levels are low, as reported by the NHTSA on Monday. The recall affects nearly 450,000 vehicles.
A glitch in the electronic control module may prevent the “check brake fluid” indicator from illuminating in the instrument panel if there is a leak or if brake fluid is otherwise compromised. Without this warning light, motorists may notice a decrease in stopping power and increased brake pedal travel. However, a red brake light may appear in the cluster if there is a complete loss of brake fluid.
This software issue can be fixed through an over-the-air update available at dealer service centers. For those who have opted for over-the-air updates, the correction can be done remotely from their homes.
The following GM models are involved in the recall:
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (59,175 units)
- 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 (35,989 units)
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe (134,854 units)
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Suburban (65,411 units)
- 2023-2024 GMC Yukon (57,083 units) and Yukon XL (44,945 units)
- 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade (33,005 units) and Escalade ESVÂ (19,209 units)
As of now, GM has not reported any accidents or injuries connected to this issue.
Owners can expect to receive a notification about the update by mail by October 28. The software fix is complimentary and covered under warranty, regardless of whether it is performed at home or at a Chevy dealership.
