General Motors is initiating a recall of 70,768 GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup trucks over concerns regarding deteriorating grilles.
This recall affects 2022 models equipped with chrome grille deflectors that were introduced midway through that model year. Trucks manufactured earlier in the model year, those lacking these specific chrome features, as well as heavy-duty Sierra 2500 and 3500 models, are not part of this recall. However, some of those heavy-duty trucks were previously recalled due to issues with faulty power tailgates, following an earlier recall for transmission problems.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the attachment points securing the front upper grille deflector can weaken over time. There are eight such points that connect the deflector to the grille, and should all of them fail, the deflector could detach while the vehicle is in motion. The agency added that drivers may hear a rattling noise if the deflector is beginning to loosen.
An unexpected loss of grille components while driving may elevate the risk of an accident, as noted by the NHTSA. GM has reported to the agency that it is aware of four instances of accidents linked to this issue, although none resulted in injuries.
A solution is currently being developed, and once available, GM will instruct owners to visit dealerships for required repairs or part replacements at no cost. The company will also provide reimbursements for owners who have already incurred expenses related to this issue.
