There has been an expansion of the recall for Genesis vehicles equipped with a flawed fuel pump that can cause engines to lose power and stop running, revealed by the NHTSA on Monday. Initially launched in September 2023, the fuel pump recall included approximately 19,000 vehicles; it now covers 31,440 vehicles from the 2022-2023 model years as well as the 2021 models from the original recall.
The low-pressure fuel pump might have an impeller that could warp over time and impact the fuel pump housing. This deformation could lead to the shutdown of the fuel pump, causing a restriction in gas supply to the engine, resulting in power loss, and raising the likelihood of an accident.
The G70 compact sedan is excluded from this recall.
In case of an issue, drivers may encounter an engine stall, notice engine hesitation or “stumbling,” experience a rough idle, or observe a malfunctioning/check engine light on the dashboard.
The parent company Hyundai confirmed 463 occurrences of fuel pump failure in the real world within the U.S. market, without any record of accidents, injuries, or fires.
Owners will receive notification of the recall via mail as soon as June 18, 2024. They will be instructed to schedule a visit to a Genesis dealership, where trained technicians will replace the fuel pump free of charge. Reimbursement will be offered to owners who have already paid for the repair.
