The rebooting issue is not an isolated case. Numerous Audi owners have shared their experiences on platforms like Reddit and Audi forums regarding the “randomly restarting” infotainment screens. This problem has been documented for several months, and even a recall notice was issued by Audi this past summer to address these concerns.
The root of the inconvenience appeared to arise when an update for the satellite radio app caused unexpected disruptions. Although SiriusXM reversed the problematic update, it unfortunately did not remedy the issue for all affected vehicles.
Audi has since stated that the issue originated from the SiriusXM app, but it’s worth noting that the automaker bears some responsibility as well.
Similar to how Apple enforces compatibility checks in its App Store, automakers should proactively ensure that every software update is thoroughly tested before being deployed. The interconnectedness of modern vehicle systems means that even minor software glitches can lead to significant disruptions in the driver interface, something that is particularly unacceptable for a premium brand like Audi.
The Audi A4 owner’s experience highlights the frustration many face: a dealer initially suggested the owner purchase a new $4,700 infotainment module prior to the recall announcement.
Audi’s official service action, released in mid-August, emphasized,
“Some customers have reported unexpected reboots of the infotainment system. After a thorough investigation, Audi determined that this issue originated with a broadcast change made by SiriusXM that was unforeseen in the original system design.”
The service action also detailed that Audi was providing a software update aimed at enhancing system stability and eliminating further reboots, with SiriusXM implementing temporary adjustments to stabilize the performance during this transition.
Following communication with Audi representatives, it was clarified that a programming update from SiriusXM was released at the beginning of the year, which necessitated a corresponding software update to the vehicle’s multimedia interface (MMI). However, not all cars had received the update, leading to compatibility issues.

It’s unfortunate for Audi that the failure of another brand has cast a shadow on its reputation. However, it’s pivotal for manufacturers like Audi to exercise greater diligence over the updates transmitted to their customers’ vehicles.
