Ford has announced a recall of 149,449 Bronco SUVs due to concerns regarding rear shock absorbers that may corrode and lose pieces, with a solution still pending.
The recall affects 2021-2024 Badlands models and those equipped with the Sasquatch off-road package. These configurations feature long flange rear shocks that are prone to corrosion in the area between the external reservoir, mounting flange, and the shock body, which could potentially lead to the reservoir detaching, as outlined by the NHTSA.
This area of potential deterioration creates a jacking force that can weaken a weld securing the external reservoir. If the reservoir detaches from the vehicle, it poses risks to other drivers and also compromises the shock absorber’s operation due to fluid loss.
As a result, even if drivers are unaware of parts falling off their SUVs, they might experience a bouncier ride, unusual sounds, or fluid leaks near the rear wheels if the external reservoir becomes detached, according to the NHTSA.
Ford informed the NHTSA that as of December 11, 2024, it had received 551 warranty claims related to this issue, but it is not aware of any associated crashes or injuries.
A solution for this problem is currently in the works. Ford plans to inform owners via mail starting on February 3 to alert them about the situation, and a subsequent notification will be sent once the fix is available. Owners who incur out-of-pocket expenses for necessary repairs will be eligible for reimbursement.
