Ford has announced yet another recall, restoring its status as the automaker with the greatest quantity of recalled vehicles once again. For three consecutive years, it has maintained the unfavorable title of experiencing the most recalls each year, and 2024 is looking to extend that streak to four years. The most recent engine recall brings the total to at least 3.7 million Fords recalled thus far this year, involving around 38 different recall events.

The latest notification revealed earlier this week by the NHTSA relates to 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln SUVs along with the Ford F-150 equipped with either a 2.7- or 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. Ford labels its turbocharged engines as EcoBoost, and the recall includes 90,736 models listed below.

    • 2021-2022 Ford Bronco
    • 2021-2022 Ford Edge
    • 2021-2022 Ford Explorer
    • 2021-2022 Ford F-150
    • 2021-2022 Lincoln Aviator
    • 2021-2022 Lincoln Nautilus

In the affected engines, the intake valves may shatter and damage the engine. Owners have reported a total loss of driving power, and Ford has admitted that such an outcome necessitates a complete engine replacement. Besides the power failure, the impacted vehicles could display a check engine light or exhibit rough running before experiencing a power loss.

The NHTSA initiated an investigation in May 2022 following consumer complaints regarding “catastrophic engine failure” and loss of driving power in the newly launched Ford Bronco of 2021. Ford broadened its inquiry into the faulty engines and recognized 487 warranty claims and 809 engine replacements. In September 2023, the NHTSA expanded its investigation to encompass all 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln models with the “Nano” engines mentioned earlier.

Currently, it has confirmed 811 global warranty claims but no recorded accidents or injuries linked to the issue.

Vehicles brought to the dealership or service center that do not pass a series of high-rpm assessments will have their engines replaced. Owners who incurred expenses for the repairs are qualified for reimbursement. While engine replacement is costly and thus not common, it is the appropriate action to ensure customer satisfaction.

In July, Toyota revealed it would substitute over 102,000 twin-turbo V-6 engines in the 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra pickup truck and Lexus LX SUV due to rough knocking and additional operational issues.
