In an attempt to overthrow the popular Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50 stand out as strong contenders in the highly sought-after vehicle category in the United States.

The Honda CR-V, a popular choice among compact crossover vehicles that were previously considered midsize, continues to closely trail Toyota in terms of sales. The introduction of a hybrid model that is anticipated to make up a significant portion of CR-V sales in the near future ensures its competitiveness in the evolving landscape of family vehicles.

On the other hand, the new Mazda CX-50 showcases Mazda’s tailored approach for the American market. While lacking a hybrid option at the moment, the CX-50 offers more space, a larger size, and a rugged twist to the sophisticated style of its predecessor, the CX-5. It is poised to replace the CX-5, following the pattern of the CX-30 replacing the CX-3 and the CX-90 supplanting the CX-9.

But how does this new contender measure up against one of the most ubiquitous vehicles on the roads today? Will the CR-V Hybrid, particularly in its Sport trims, outshine its rival, or will the off-road features of the CX-50 attract more attention and sales?

What is the cost of a Mazda CX-50? Which variant should I opt for?

Mazda provides a wider array of options than Honda within the compact crossover segment, with offerings spanning from entry-level to premium models. The CX-50 presents two powertrain choices across eight trim levels that sound quite similar. The inclusion of standard all-wheel drive provides an edge over the CR-V, unless the slight premium for a hybrid system is a significant consideration.

Both the CX-50 and CR-V base editions come with advanced driver-assist technology, cloth seats, smartphone integration, and a basic warranty covering 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Even in its base Select form, the CX-50 2.5 S enhances the driving experience by enabling wireless Apple CarPlay and incorporating an 8.8-inch infotainment display. Mazda opts for a console-mounted controller dial as the primary interface with the system, or alternatively, the larger 10.3-inch touchscreen which remains somewhat challenging to reach. In contrast, Honda’s interface features larger icons, a more straightforward layout, and primarily one-touch operations.

Our recommended choice, the $35,000 2.5S Premium model, comes with options like a 10-speaker Bose sound system, leather upholstery, heated power front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Conversely, the more potent turbocharged engine in the 2.5 Turbo variant comes at a higher price point, nearly $43,000 for the 2.5 Turbo Premium.

    2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid

How much does a Honda CR-V cost? Which Honda CR-V variant should I choose?

Even the fully loaded Hybrid Sport Touring version of the Honda CR-V is priced under $42,000. This model comes with all-wheel drive and features Honda’s premium offerings, comparable to those found in the CX-50 2.5 Turbo. It includes a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, leather seating, 19-inch wheels, a Bose 12-speaker sound system, navigation, and a wifi hotspot.

This represents excellent value and is only $11,000 more than the base front-wheel-drive CR-V LX, which features a 7.0-inch touchscreen. Throughout the lineup, the CR-V includes a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, in addition to keyless ignition and LED headlights.

We recommend the $37,000 CR-V Hybrid Sport AWD model, which adds sporty blacked-out trim pieces, stylish black 18-inch wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. All CR-V Hybrid variants come with a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a sunroof, and blind-spot monitors.

For those seeking additional features on the Hybrid model without opting for the top-tier Sport Touring, Honda has introduced a Sport-L version for 2024, starting at around $38,000. This model includes leather seats, a power liftgate, wireless device charging, and wireless smartphone integration via CarPlay or Android Auto.

Advantage: CX-50 for AWD enthusiasts, CR-V Hybrid for those focused on efficiency.

CR-V vs. CX-50 performance and specifications

The CX-50 is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, CX-50 Turbo models utilize a 2.5-liter turbo-4 engine generating 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Honda CR-V is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo-4 powertrain producing 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport models generate 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.

How is the driving experience of the Mazda CX-50?

The driving experience of the CX-50 is a blend of various attributes. The standard 2.5-liter inline-4 engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, allowing for higher revs and increased power output once the vehicle is in motion. However, this setup does introduce more cabin noise. Sport mode enhances throttle response, while Off-road mode adjusts for increased torque at lower speeds. Despite its capabilities, the real charm of the Mazda lies in its exceptional steering precision and poised handling.

The CX-50 offers a comfortable ride, with its front strut and torsion beam rear suspension ensuring an optimal balance between firmness and suppleness. While it may not excel in sharp cornering, it provides a well-balanced driving experience with minimal body lean compared to the CR-V, thanks to its shorter stature and closer-to-the-ground design. The electric-assisted steering system helps maintain the CX-50’s trajectory without necessitating frequent corrections.

Opting for the available 2.5-liter turbo-4 engine further amplifies Mazda’s driving characteristics (using 93-octane fuel boosts output to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque). Paired with the 6-speed transmission, this setup offers a sportier driving feel. However, there may be some turbo lag from a standstill, even in Sport mode. The turbo engine truly shines above 2,000 rpm, delivering an exhilarating surge that makes highway merges and on-ramp acceleration enjoyable experiences.

How is the driving experience of the Honda CR-V?

Both versions of the CR-V prioritize efficiency over raw power, emphasizing a balance between performance and fuel economy.

The Sport designation assigned to these Hybrid models may be somewhat misleading, despite their technical superiority over non-hybrids. The Sport, Sport-L, and Sport Touring trims combine a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine following the Atkinson cycle with a duo of electric motors. The 1.4-kwh battery pack propels the motors for electric drive during low speeds and light acceleration. When more power is demanded, the engine acts primarily as a generator for the system. It remains remarkably quiet in Eco and Normal modes. Simulated gear shifts reduce revs, while Sport mode enhances simulated engine noise. While the CX-50 exhibits more bouncing and leaning compared to the CR-V, it offers a better connection to the road.

Mazda has reportedly recalibrated the power steering and introduced new dampers for the CX-50 in 2024, an uncommon move for a vehicle in its second model year. We will provide updated feedback on this model as soon as we have the opportunity to revisit it.

In non-hybrid CR-Vs, the 1.5-liter turbo-4 engine’s lower peak torque at 1,700 rpm (compared to 2,000 rpm) allows it to be slightly faster than the CX-50 Turbo without experiencing lag similar to the latter model. The CR-V’s CVT may exhibit some engine noise under heavy acceleration but remains smooth and quiet during city driving.

Winner: CX-50 Turbo for performance, CR-V hybrid for overall excellence.

CR-V vs. CX-50 dimensions and specifications

Although the CX-50 is larger than the Mazda CX-5 and the CR-V, the latter is more spacious. The CR-V boasts 39.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity compared to the CX-50’s 31.4 cubic feet. CR-V provides 41 inches of rear legroom, while the CX-50 offers 39.8 inches. The CR-V hybrid’s battery pack is positioned below the cargo area, resulting in no compromise of space compared to gas models.

How spacious is the Honda CR-V?

Both models comfortably accommodate four adults, with the central fifth seat usable in a pinch. Honda’s interior design reflects its emphasis on optimizing space. Despite being an inch shorter than the Mazda CX-50 at 184.8 inches, the CR-V features a wheelbase 4.5 inches longer than its counterpart. This typically leads to a more spacious interior. Honda further enhances the CR-V’s roominess by making it half an inch wider and approximately three inches taller.

The CR-V’s layout is tailored to accommodate various belongings efficiently, featuring a deep center console, generous door pockets, and a tiered cargo floor in gas-powered models. Opting for models beyond the base LX grants heated front seats with power driver adjustments. However, the deep seat bottoms may inadvertently become catchalls for loose change and other items.

The most significant disparity with the CX-50 is observed behind the front seats, where the CR-V boasts superior legroom and headroom. With 41 inches of rear legroom, the CR-V offers one of the most generous interiors in its class.

The vertical space advantage also translates to cargo volume, with the rear seats configured in a reclining 60/40-split fashion, freeing up 39.3 cubic feet of storage. Once folded, the space expands to 76.5 cubic feet, albeit with a floor that isn’t entirely flat due to the rear seats protruding higher than the cargo area.

How spacious is the Mazda CX-50?

Mazda finishes the CX-50 with higher-quality materials compared to the CR-V, featuring leather upholstery, stylish cross-stitching, and refined materials across all trims. However, the vehicle exhibits noticeable tire and wind noise during highway driving. Designed to cater to American preferences, the CX-50 surpasses the Mazda CX-5 in size and aims to compete with the Toyota RAV4; nonetheless, it falls short of matching the CR-V in cargo and passenger space.

The front seats in the CX-50 provide ample support and most versions include power adjustments and seat warmers. Rear passengers benefit from 39.8 inches of legroom, although the headroom of 37.5 inches is marginally less than the CR-V by 0.7 inch.

the CR-V, with sunroofs equipped. The cargo space of the CR-V is smaller compared to that of the CX-50, measuring at 31.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats or 56.3 with the rear seats folded down.

How secure is the Mazda CX-50?

It boasts excellent safety features based on the standard driver-assist technology and crash ratings stated above—including top “good” crash ratings from the IIHS in its newly revamped moderate overlap front and side impact tests. However, rear visibility is limited, prompting consideration of the optional surround-view camera system and parking sensors.

How secure is the Honda CR-V?

The CR-V scores well in crash tests, with the exception of a poor result in the latest IIHS moderate overlap test. Apart from that, its safety ratings are comparable to those of the Mazda, although the CX-50 includes standard blind-spot monitors whereas on the CR-V, they are optional. Honda makes up for this by including a rear-seat reminder and a driver attention monitor as standard. Rear visibility is slightly better, but not adequate for a significant advantage, and it lacks the driver-assist features of the CX-50.

Is the Mazda CX-50 visually appealing?

The CX-50 departs from the smooth design of the CX-5 with a more angular, bolder, and typically SUV look that resonates with the American market. Featuring a wide grille, cladded bulging fenders, faux air intakes, and squared-off edges, it aligns with other compact crossovers that hint at an SUV lineage.

The interior highlights a protruding center screen but maintains an uncluttered and sleek appearance. The availability of leather upholstery with stylish contrast stitching adds to its appeal.

Is the Honda CR-V aesthetically pleasing?

The CR-V blends various design elements. The LX and EX trims emanate a look reminiscent of the Volkswagen Tiguan with flat body panels and a high-ridged hood. The broader front grille takes cues from the mid-size Passport, while the thin A-pillars are reminiscent of the latest Civic. The Sport hybrid models inject some dynamism with black wheels and dark exterior accents.

Influences from the Civic are evident in the interior design, featuring a mesh vent panel and tasteful accents that exude a sense of tranquility. A mechanical gear shifter occupies the center console, and the available 9.0-inch touchscreen is prominently placed at the top of the dashboard. Even the less expensive plastic components receive a touch of style with carbon fiber-like trim on the door panels.

Which is the superior choice: Mazda CX-50 or Honda CR-V?

As the most popular CR-V models are the hybrids, it receives a higher rating in the TCC Rating system than the Mazda CX-50. Its serene and noise-free ride quality also contributes to a higher rating of 7.0 out of 10. Although the CX-50 is equipped better and its base engine is more cost-effective than the CR-V, its lack of electrification lowers its rating to 6.7 out of 10.
