Ford issued a warning on Tuesday advising owners of several older models that have not yet replaced potentially deadly Takata airbag inflators under three previous recalls.
A notice from Ford mentioned that there are still pending replacements for driver and passenger airbag inflators in the following models:
- 2004-2006 Ranger
- 2005-2014 Mustang
- 2005-2006 GT
Moreover, the following models require a replacement for passenger airbag inflators:
- 2006-2012 Ford Fusion
- 2006-2012 Mercury Milan
- 2006-2012 Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ
- 2007-2010 Ford Edge
- 2007-2010 Lincoln MKX
- 2007-2011 Ford Ranger

The first recall goes back to 2015 when Ford, along with other car manufacturers, were alerted that Takata’s airbag inflators might have unstable pyrotechnic components that could lead to an explosion releasing metal fragments that could harm occupants in the event of a crash. Ford stated that approximately 765,600 airbag inflators in Ford and Lincoln vehicles worldwide are impacted, with 374,300 in the U.S.
Ford stated that 95% of customers have completed the recall repairs due to over 121 million outreach attempts in the U.S., including letters, emails, phone calls, text messages, and over a million in-person visits to customers’ residences. However, some vehicles still have potentially faulty airbag inflators, and due to their age, Ford warns that there is an increased likelihood of these inflators exploding.

Replacement parts for the inflators are currently in stock. Customers can opt for mobile service or have their vehicles towed to a dealership for the recall work at no cost. Dealers also offer free loaner cars if needed.
