105,588 vehicles from various model lines are being recalled by BMW due to potentially defective starter motors.
The recall involves: BMX X5 (sDrive40i and xDrive40i) from 2019 and 2020, BMW X6 (sDrive40i and xDrive40i) from 2020, BMW X7 (xDrive40i) from 2019 and 2020, BMW 7-Series (740i and 740xi) from 2020 and 2021, BMW 8-Series coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe (840i and 840xi) from 2020, and BMW 3-Series (M340i and M340xi) from 2020. All of these vehicles are equipped with inline-6 engines.
These vehicles may experience an issue with the engine starter that could result in a loss of functionality, as reported by the NHTSA. Continued attempts to start the vehicle with a faulty starter may lead to an electrical overload, causing overheating and creating a fire hazard due to combustible materials in the engine compartment coming into contact with the overheated starter, such as acoustic insulation.
BMW has acknowledged about 12 customer complaints connected to this problem in its recall documents, including instances of heat damage in the engine compartment. However, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries due to this issue.
Owners of the affected vehicles will need to have a software update installed to prevent electrical overload of the starter. This service must be carried out at an authorized dealership, and BMW intends to dispatch notification letters with instructions for scheduling appointments on September 23, 2024. For more information, owners can reach out to BMW customer support at 1-800-525-7417 or visit BMW’s recall page.
This recall follows shortly after BMW’s recall of over 290,000 X3 crossover SUVs, although this time it is not related to the powertrain but concerns detachable interior cargo rails in BMX’s top-selling model in the U.S.
