BMW is initiating a recall for 291,112 X3 SUVs due to concerns about interior cargo rails potentially detaching in the event of a collision and causing harm to individuals.
This recall affects various versions of the X3 produced between 2018 and 2023, such as the X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X3 M, as reported by the NHTSA on Monday. These models constitute the majority of the X3 series, which has been BMW’s top-selling model in the United States in recent times. The latest significant update for the X3 was for the 2022 model, with its last complete overhaul dating back to 2018.
The vehicles in question come with rear cargo rails that could sustain damage in an accident, potentially detaching from their fixtures and posing a risk of causing harm to passengers. BMW has not provided specific details regarding the cause of this problem.
The matter was brought to BMW’s attention through a legal case involving an owner who was in a rear-end collision. The recall scope was determined by reviewing production records to identify vehicles utilizing this particular rear cargo rail setup. Although BMW did not introduce significant changes to the X3 for the 2024 model year, those specific models are not part of this recall. A revamped X3 is set to launch in 2025.
Affected owners will receive notification by mail on August 30, 2024, with instructions to visit authorized dealerships, where the attachment bolts for the rear cargo rails will be replaced at no cost. BMW will also reimburse owners who have already incurred expenses for this work.
