For enthusiasts who may believe that BMW has strayed off course, there is solace in the fact that Genesis remains dedicated to the compact sport sedan ethos, all while offering great value.
Although the 2024 Genesis G70 has a slightly lower TCC Rating of 6.5 out of 10 compared to the BMW 3-Series’ 7.2 out of 10, it caters to the desires of enthusiasts. Featuring a refined design, updated technology that avoids overwhelming with screens, and robust powertrain options, the G70 is the preferred choice for enthusiasts looking for value. However, it does have a higher fuel consumption, a compact trunk, and Genesis still lacks the prestige of brands like BMW or Mercedes-Benz for those who prioritize such factors.
2024 Genesis G70
Pro: Genesis provides excellent value with the G70
First and foremost, let’s discuss the value proposition offered by the G70 in this segment. The G70 is priced at $42,750, which includes a $1,250 destination charge, making it approximately $2,000 cheaper than a base BMW 3-Series. The BMW comes with a smaller engine that produces 45 fewer horsepower. In comparison, my fully-equipped all-wheel-drive 3.3-liter turbo-6 Sport Prestige test vehicle cost $57,700, nearly $2,000 less than the starting price of an all-wheel-drive turbo-6 3-Series before any additional options are included. The cost of these options can quickly escalate, potentially raising the 3-Series’ price to $68,000. The G70 truly offers outstanding value for the money.
2024 Genesis G70 Promotion
Con: Genesis is still a newcomer in the industry
Many individuals see the winged Genesis badge, which bears a resemblance to Bentley’s motif, and are unfamiliar with the name or logo. This issue has not been addressed adequately even through a few Super Bowl ads. Arriving in a Genesis at a high-end restaurant valet does not carry the same prestige as the BMW or Mercedes-Benz logos, at least not yet. However, one could argue that it is just a matter of time.
2024 Genesis G70 Engine
Pro: G70 showcases potent turbocharged powertrains
Every G70 model comes equipped with a turbocharged engine. The base models feature a new, larger, and more powerful 2.5-liter turbo-4 engine producing 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. This engine replaces the previous 2.0-liter turbo-4, resulting in a significant increase of 48 hp and 51 lb-ft in total output. In contrast, my test vehicle was equipped with the more potent 3.3-liter turbo-6 engine generating an impressive 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Its performance resembles that of German engines, paired with a responsive 8-speed automatic transmission, enabling a swift 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds. Despite having a V-cylinder configuration instead of an inline setup, the engine performs exceptionally well.
2024 Genesis G70 Fuel Economy
Con: G70 consumes a significant amount of fuel
Despite the absence of an electrified G70 variant, its GV70 crossover SUV counterpart is available with either gasoline or electric powertrains. The turbo-6 engine in my test model has EPA fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. After driving around 150 miles in a mixed suburban environment, the G70 achieved an average fuel consumption close to its EPA rating, at 19.8 mpg. Nevertheless, this fuel efficiency is relatively low for a compact sedan, emphasizing the tradeoff between performance and fuel consumption.
2024 Genesis G70 Design
Pro: Genesis maintains its elegant and cohesive design
The external updates for 2024 are subtle. Notably, the modification to the Genesis logo stands out. It almost feels like playing a game of “Where’s Waldo.” The Vatna Gray color on my test vehicle is one of two new color choices; the other being Kawah Blue, which is quite appealing. The distinct Superman shield grille, twin-slit headlights, and muscular fenders are all retained.
2024 Genesis G70 Speedometer
Internally, all G70 models are updated with an 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster next to the analog speedometer. The 10.3-inch touchscreen is distinct from this unit, diverging from the trend of having curved screens cluttered on the dashboard beneath a glass panel, a common feature in BMW models. The physical climate control buttons have been replaced by a small touchscreen, which, though different, remains intuitive, user-friendly even at higher speeds, and enhanced by the presence of actual buttons and knobs.
2024 Genesis G70 Trunk Space
Con: G70 offers limited trunk space
The G70 continues to provide a small 10.5 cubic foot trunk, while the 3-Series boasts a larger 17 cubic feet trunk capacity. Genesis drivers will need to pack lightly if they plan on a weekend getaway.
For buyers who prioritize the practicality and stylish appeal of a luxury sport sedan without the emphasis on brand prestige, the Genesis G70 is a compelling choice. However, this recommendation comes with the caveat of not having hybrid or electric alternatives on offer.
