Stellantis is initiating a recall for 44,500 plug-in hybrid crossover SUVs worldwide due to potential issues with brake pedals that may crack under pressure.
The affected models include the 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and the 2024 Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrids, with a total of 21,069 vehicles impacted in the U.S., as stated in a press release from Stellantis on Wednesday. The recall also affects 2,299 vehicles in Canada, 145 in Mexico, and 20,987 in other international markets.
These plug-in hybrids might feature brake pedals that are prone to breaking when pressed, making them ineffective. In such cases, drivers can utilize the electronic parking brake located on the center console to help reduce speed, according to Stellantis. The company also indicates that, if engaged, the automatic emergency braking system will activate if a crash seems likely.
Stellantis estimates that 5% of the recalled units may possess this defect, and it has recorded 15 instances of brake-pedal failure across the globe. One of these incidents resulted in a crash, but the automaker has not reported any associated injuries or fatalities.
The solution involves reinforcing the brake pedal, which dealers will carry out at no cost to owners. Stellantis plans to send out notification letters to vehicle owners on October 24. For further details, owners can reach out to Stellantis customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or check the automaker’s recall website.
The Hornet and Tonale share a close relationship, perhaps more than Alfa Romeo’s product planners intended. The Tonale is available solely as a plug-in hybrid in the U.S. and was introduced as a 2024 model. This is also the model year for the Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid, labeled R/T, which followed a non-hybrid version of the Hornet launched in 2023.
