    2027 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Review: A Powerful New V-8 On The Horizon

Mercedes-Benz has been making waves in the automotive world lately, especially with the upcoming refresh for the beloved GLS-Class. If you’re a fan of luxury SUVs, you’re probably as excited as we are to learn that the latest prototype we’ve caught a glimpse of is none other than the souped-up AMG GLS 63 model.

It’s worth mentioning that the current GLS-Class made its debut back in 2020, and in a refreshing move, it received an update for the 2024 model year. Well, it looks like Mercedes isn’t done yet. The prototypes we’re seeing now signal a more substantial second update for this full-size powerhouse, expected to hit the U.S. market in the 2027 model year. This isn’t just going to be a minor tweak; it’s shaping up to be a real game-changer.

Spotted under some significant camouflage, this updated model reveals hints of fresh lighting elements at both the front and back, complete with tiny Mercedes star logos. The design language is evolving, showcasing new fascias and a reimagined grille up front. While we can’t see everything right off the bat, it’s reasonable to assume that Mercedes is also fine-tuning the underlying chassis and powertrain components, as they constantly strive for that perfect balance of performance and comfort.

Now, let’s talk power. There’s some buzz around a potential new electrified V-8 engine that Mercedes confirmed earlier this year. This advancement could bring mild-hybrid technology into play, and rumor has it that we might even see a flat-plane crankshaft—a feature that usually indicates serious performance pedigree. We’re anticipating this electrified heart to debut later this year in the much-anticipated AMG CLE 63, setting the stage for an exhilarating driving experience.

As it stands, the current GLS 63 is equipped with a robust twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine generating an impressive 603 horsepower. This powerhouse works in tandem with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, ensuring that power reaches all four wheels seamlessly through a nine-speed automatic transmission. However, there’s a possibility that Mercedes may drop the V-8 option in the regular GLS-Class as they focus on higher-performance models like the AMG G 63 in the updated 2025 G-Class.

Typically, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t play the update game more than once during a product’s life cycle, which usually spans about seven to eight years. But the decision for a second facelift on the GLS-Class signals that this luxurious SUV will be around for a while longer. This move indicates a strategic response to the evolving market, especially as demand for electric vehicles hasn’t surged quite as quickly as expected. Although Mercedes initially set an ambitious goal to go fully electric by 2030, they’ve recently announced that they will continue offering traditional gas-powered models beyond that timeline, ensuring that drivers still have options.

In addition to the GLS-Class, there are whispers of a second facelift for the GLE-Class range, with prototypes also in the testing phase. As this luxury brand continues to adapt and evolve in this ever-changing automotive landscape, one thing remains clear: Mercedes-Benz is committed to delivering the highest levels of performance, luxury, and innovation for years to come.

For anyone who values the robust power of a luxury SUV or the latest automotive technology, this news is certainly something to keep an eye on. The future looks bright for the GLS-Class and other models in the Mercedes lineup, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next. Whether you’re an electric enthusiast or a gas-powered advocate, rest assured there’s something exciting just around the corner!
