The existing 3-Series, which marks the seventh generation of this model, was introduced for the 2019 model year, receiving an initial refresh for 2023, followed by another update planned for 2025.
The next-generation, significantly redesigned 3-Series is anticipated to make its debut in late 2026 or early 2027, which suggests it will likely be available as a 2027 model in the U.S. This launch will follow that of an electric model, set to be branded as the i3, with prototypes for the i3 also undergoing public testing.
The i3 will be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse EV platform, which is set to debut the next year in the iX3 compact crossover that is part of the X3 family. Similarly, the i3 will be included in the 3-Series lineup.
The gasoline variant of the 3-Series will utilize an updated version of the CLAR platform from the current 3-Series, which accommodates vehicles with gasoline and hybrid drivetrains. It is expected that the existing turbocharged 4- and 6-cylinder engines will be retained, possibly with modifications to comply with stricter emissions regulations. A plug-in hybrid option will also be available, aligning with BMW’s strategy to provide customers with varied powertrain choices.
While the electric and gasoline sedans will share a similar aesthetic, there will be design differences in proportions to accommodate the varying powertrains, as disclosed by BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk in a recent interview. The new design direction was initially previewed last year with the Vision Neue Klasse concept.

While there are no clear images of the interior yet, the next-generation interiors from BMW are anticipated to feature user interfaces that emphasize head-up displays and make better use of controls integrated into the steering wheel. Already previewed in some of the recent Neue Klasse prototypes, the user interface is expected to have one head-up display for crucial driving information and another dedicated to the infotainment system.
High-performance BMW M variants for both the gasoline-powered 3-Series and the electric i3 are in development. The electric version is anticipated to come with a four-motor powertrain producing over 1,000 horsepower. M engineers have been testing this powertrain on public roads since at least 2022.
