Kia has recently been seen testing the hatchback variant of its forthcoming EV4 electric compact car.
The EV4 was unveiled last year in the form of a concept that displayed a sleek liftback design, with prototypes of that style having previously been caught on camera.
The newest spy images and videos showcase a prototype that features a more conventional hatchback silhouette.
Both variants of the EV4 are anticipated to debut next year, and should they be introduced in the U.S., they will likely be classified as 2026 models.
The EV4 will utilize the flexible E-GMP platform of Hyundai Motor Group, which is also used in models like the EV6 and EV9, as well as some offerings from Hyundai and Genesis. To manage expenses, Kia is likely to opt for the more affordable 400-volt version of the platform instead of the 800-volt variant. This approach was similarly taken with the EV3 subcompact crossover that launched in May.
It remains uncertain how much horsepower the EV4 will generate. To date, Kia has only showcased the EV3 equipped with a single electric motor that produces 201 horsepower. The automaker is expected to offer the 201-hp motor as the standard option in the EV4, along with a more robust dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration.
The interior is expected to feature a minimalist design with a unified panel that combines displays for both the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system, similar to what was seen in the EV4 concept. When the concept was introduced, Kia revealed plans to equip the production model with a new AI-driven voice assistant, which the brand intends to roll out across an increasing number of its vehicles.
The EV4 is part of Kia’s goal to have 14 electric vehicles in its global lineup by 2027. Additional models in development include two pickup trucks, an EV2 compact crossover, a PV5 midsize van, and potentially an EV8 sedan that could replace the Stinger and K8 sedans sold in international markets.
