Volvo has announced a recall of 2,061 EX90 electric SUVs due to a software glitch that may disrupt the proper functioning of their headlights.
The EX90, which debuted for the 2025 model year, may contain faulty software programming in the low power control units in some of its initial models, as reported by the NHTSA. This issue could trigger a “reference run” signal to the headlights while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in shutters closing over both the low- and high-beam components.
The shutters, which support the EX90’s daytime running lights, are designed to open when the headlights are activated and to remain open while driving. If these shutters close, the headlights will be obstructed, significantly impairing the driver’s ability to see the roadway at night and increasing the likelihood of an accident.
According to Volvo, only the vehicles manufactured from the beginning of production up until January 31, 2025, are affected by this software issue. Models produced after this date have the corrected software installed, and those undergoing recall will receive the update through an over-the-air (OTA) process or at a dealership. The software update will be provided at no costs to the customers, who will also be compensated for any expenses incurred as a result of the issue.
The OTA update is planned for February 11, while notification letters regarding the recall will be sent out beginning April 3. Vehicle owners can reach out to Volvo’s customer service at 1-800-458-1552 or can visit Volvo’s recall webpage, referencing recall number R10298.
This marks the first recall for the EX90, although delays in its launch were caused by software-related issues, which also affected the Polestar 3, a vehicle sharing the same SPA2 architecture and produced at the same South Carolina plant. Additionally, when production commenced last year, ongoing software challenges resulted in the EX90 being delivered without certain anticipated features.
